about

Sauron's Childhood is Jan's fourth all-instrumental release, also featuring the solo grand piano rendition of the track Arrivals and Departures from the 2019's EP Mood Studies.

The central track of this release was hugely inspired by Jan's affection with the JRR Tolkien's works, as well as the slight discontent due to the fact that the hugest part of it (The Silmarillion) still had not been dramatised and therefore does not have a motion picture soundtrack.

In essence, this is an attempt to take a peek into what the early life of a villain might look like and find that ambiguous point where things go awry. Do they all have a fatal flaw in which evil fits in like a key in a lock? Is there a subtle melody that triggers the whole body of darkness and eventually sends the orc legions marching into the battle? Do they at any point in their lives regret this seemingly benign choice? Is there a gentle humane understory hidden in the grand maleficent theme? These are all the questions that Jan was asking himself when he embarked on creating this piece.

The main theme is accompanied by a two-part New World suite that tells the story of a futuristic metropolis governed by artificial intelligence.

All tracks on this EP have each their own music video that you might want to watch on Jan's YouTube channel:

Later on, I moved to Mars where I learned to play piano and started writing dance music for low-gravity worlds. It would probably be easier to just listen. ... more
